scrabble rule question
The word "neat" is on the board. Can a person add the suffix "en" in the vertical direction and then build another word in the horizintal direction by laying down more tiles (in this case the "ou" and "ce" in "ounce") all in one turn? I thought the rules limit tile laying to one direction at a time.

Hence his insistence that can build a new word off the end of the suffix...
one direction at a time....
one direction at a time....
I think it's fine to extend an existing word by a single letter while going in a different direction from that word, such taking the vertical word CAT and adding the horizontal word SEAT, turn CAT into SCAT or CATS in the process.

Right, but what he was describing was:
N E A T
becomes
...............O
...............U
N E A T E N
...............C
...............E
In which the player starts to add letters horizantally (E N) and then adds them vertically... In your example the letters could have been added in one direction...
The second player, and then each in turn, adds one or more letters to those already played to form new words. All letters played on a turn must be placed in one row across or down the board, to form at least one complete word. If, at the same time, they touch others letters in adjacent rows, those must also form complete words, crossword fashion, with all such letters. The player gets full credit for all words formed or modified on his or her turn.
Your friend is absolutely wrong.
