Firmware update.

What is the best way to see if a MacBook needs a firmware update? Usually, someone will link to an Apple page that shows the latest version, but they never match. But my MacBook (C2D) came out after the release date of the latest update posted on the Apple page. The Apple support page says to download the updater and it will tell you if you need an update, but I'm not sure which one to download.

Any easy way to check?

According the Apple download page http://www.apple.com/support/downloa...eupdate11.html the latest SMC version (firmware) is 1.4f12

you can download the firmware update from here. You can check the version using 'System Profiler' in /Applications/Utilities. In the hardware selection you'll find 'SMC Version: ....."

    Hope this helps.

Right, but the thing that gets me is, that version was from October. I have a C2D MB that wasn't even released until the second half of November with a different version. It doesn't make sense to me.

I just ran the update, and the message tells me that my computer does not need that update. So, the version on the Apple website is wrong?

Not necessarily. I think it just means there have been no updates since your system was produced.

Right, but the Apple website says make sure you have the latest firmware which is this version: XXXX. If you don't, you need it. I do not have that version, but yet it says I am up to date.

Just use software update. If it says you are up to date then it's right. Don't over think it. Some software engineer at Apple over thought it for you.

There are two different types of firmware updates for Intel Macs: EFI ones and SMC ones. The two are unrelated, and one does not update the other.

SMC firmware updates concern such matters as fan control and power management. EFI firmware updates are more general; with older Intel Macs, for example, Boot Camp requires an EFI firmware update.

To the best of my knowledge, there are no firmware updates for the C2D MacBook at this point.

I appreciate all of the input. I was starting think that no one was going to respond.

I had originally thought that the Software Update would find any firmware updates. but Apple's own website stated that Software Update would not find some firmware updates. Combine that with the fact that my version numbers didn't match what Apple said were the latest versions, and I had some confusion on my hands. Thanks again for the input.

It's quite simple, that Firmware update was not for the Core 2 Duo Macbook, only the Core Duo one, therefore it won't update.

The Macbook C2D has yet to be upgraded with Firmware, but when it is updated usually AI or some other Apple site will post an article on the Update and what it fixes. Kind of nice of them
