Yes, I think it's a good idea, I mentioned just such an idea two days ago in the main iPhone thread. We've also had some further discussion over their on this topic. But basically the combination of multitouch and software gives Apple and maybe even the end user several options.
But here's something irreverent to typist, seeing as I'm basically a 2-4 finger typist; Why have a QWERTY keypad on the iPhone (or any cell phone for that matter)? I mean it's not like you are going to enter text with 10 fingers! Another end user software option! Arrange the keys in alphebitical order. Yes!
Finally, on my LCD (100ppi) your images are within a few precent of the iPhones actual physical dimensions (2.4" W by 4.5" L), in case anyone is wondering about the actual physical appearance.
