Yeah a 6th generation iPod is definitely needed. Apple says they now have a widescreen video iPod (the iPhone) but it only holds up to 8 gigs, and that is hardly anything for videos. I have a 30 gig 5th generation and its loaded with videos, but I still could use more space. I can't imagine storing videos on 8 gigs.
6th Gen = Widescreen TouchPod with CoverFlow finger gestures, etc. etc. The "Phoneless" iPhone as you say. Heh.
There may not be a "virtual scroll wheel", they might go with the "finger swipe" scrolling method for the vertical orientation.
Apple will be quite smart though, in the "landscape" position there might be a way (besides CoverFlow*) to access your music by Artist, Playlist... and in the "portrait" position it will be like the iPhone.
R&D from iPhone --> Flow into 6th gen iPod.
3rd Gen Nano and Shuffle become sexy tiny things. Not sure what features they can bump it up with to keep that entry market sexy and abundant and curvylicious.
*Since CoverFlow is predominantly an Album-based browsing, not Playlist-based

When, and what, do you expect?
Well.... you tell us, and we'll tell you. I don't think anyone really knows for sure, but I'm guessing a phoneless iPhone.
