Best LCD Under $500

I'm a law student on a budget who feels absolutely cramped working with multiple documents on the 15" screen of my MBP.

What's the best LCD I can buy for under $500. I'm not quite looking to spend that much: the Dell 22" Widescreen LCD for $329 seems to suit my purposes just fine, even though the screen resolution is only marginally higher than what I have right now. But I just need more real estate for looking at text documents and whatnot. What do you guys suggest?

check NewEgg.com. Look for either Samsung or Chimei. They are two of the companies who manufacture the actual panels that are in everyone else's displays. Very good quality, and excellent prices.

I'm not a fan of Dell in general, but their displays are some of the best value around IMO. I've used a 20" and 24" widescreen Dell and I thought both were great. You can often find them on sale.

    Oh good suggestion.

I'm now considering a butt-ugly Chimei 22"-- same resolution, response time, and contrast ratio-- but it's 30 bucks cheaper *and* 30 nits brighter than the Dell.

    Thanks Celemourn.

Maybe you're not what's wrong with this country after all.

    LMAO

I should also note that Apple uses both Chimei and Samsung panels in the MacBook Pro 15".

    I saw that.

The thin bezel on the Dell is definitely a plus-- but it's not as bright at the Chimei I'm looking at.

I wonder how much of a difference 300 vs. 330 is.... since I might get annoyed with the thick bezel on the Chimei.

If your reading text documents, I thik you would be better served with a standard 4:3 monitor, something with 1600x1200 resolution rather than a widescreen. I wouldn't worry about the brightness thing, from what I can gather most of us turn the brightness down to 25% anyway, these numbers are marketing gimmicks

    Hm why is that?

    I found a Dell 20" with 1600 x 1200 resolution but it's $50 more and 2" smaller than the Dell 22"

well because you get more of the vertical resolution to see the document and lose a bit of the horizontal that you dont need. 1200 is a nice vertical resolution, in Acrobat I can just see a full page of A4 at 100% zoom, I understand your 'letter' format is slightly smaller, so you could in effect view whole pages at a time and just flick between them rather than having to scoll down and flick.

The best thing would be if you can get a monitor you can rotate into portrait mode, some of them readjust your graphics card (like the iphone does) when you rotate them on the fly, but sorry I forget the models that offer this.
