"sleep of death tips" anyone

Hello

I have an older G4 Ti Powerbook that is starting to misbehave. Namely, it sometimes will not wake up. cntrl-Command-reboot also fails to reboot. Basically I can't Restart. Even when I try to shut down the thing just goes to sleep (caps lock light still works, display goes to black). I can sometimes wake it up with holding down the boot button while holding down the S key. When I do this it makes the start up chime followed by (no kidding) a recorded gun shot sound. Then I will have a period of normal service until the next time I have trouble waking up.

thanks in advance for any advice.

If what you're hearing sound like this it's a "death chime" that indicates a hardware failure somewhere in the boot process (for what it's worth it's called "car crash").

Try reseating your ram, for starters. This particular chime seems to often be associated with ram problems.

Thanks for the tip addabox. I am responding to you on the machine in question, and yes, that sound does resemble the sound I heard, minus the tire squealing. I am getting a new one, but it has not arrived yet. Time to back up like crazy...
