switched now want to install xp
hey guys i just got my new macbook pro this morning (first mac!).
and first off i have to say it is great, got the glossy screen version and it is perfect, slightly darker or lighter edges on screen, nothing signifigant.
anyway i want to install xp via boot camp so to play some games, i was wondering if i could actually use the copy of xp that is used on my old dell laptop even though i won't be uninstalling it from the dell.
1. will it let me being that it is completely different hardware
2. will microsoft detect it is a 2nd version
3. my xp disc is original plain old xp so i will have to slipstream sp2 with it, now does that change the situation at all.
just want to get feedback on this, if it is not possible i guess i will buy another copy of xp.

If it's a genuine XP CD, it should be fine.

If the two computers are connected on a network then possibly. Microsoft are very good at detecting multiple copies. It's a pain where I work because we have a few licenses for Office and if two machine have the same one, it stops the program working so I have to figure out which copy every single machine has.

People seem to have had success with that so give it a go.

ok so i went out and bought another copy of xp
Haven't opened it yet.
anyway the guy in the shop was telling me that if you buy a new computer with vista installed you don't get the software on cd! so you have to take it back into the shop if you need to reinstall it! wow that suks big time. no oem cds for customers it stays within the shop. obviously if you buy vista retail version you get the cd but still. just thought some people might want to know.

Back when I had bought a dell, mine came with Windows ME (ouch). After I got more into computers I tried to use the install CD from Dell to install it on my self-made computer. Unfortunately, it checked the system (I'm assuming Dells have some BIOS call built in) and told me I could not install it on a non-dell system.
It's worth a try; just throwing this out there.
