Intel Boot Issues

I'm having a problem when starting up my Intel Mac...

When I have any external firewire drive connected or my iPod it doesn't see the startup drive and just gets stuck on the grey startup screen.

It's getting a bit annoying having to unplug everything every time it crashes or I have to reboot, so any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Maybe your internal drive isn't set as the default boot drive and at startup it's looking for another system. Try going to system prefs, startup disk and select your internal drive. Reboot and see if it still hangs. If it does, start in verbose mode by holding command-v and you should see the boot process and it may give you an idea where it's hanging up.
