Dead Ibook G4 1Ghz

Hi,

I have a dead Ibook. The battery was alredy running on empty. Sudden crash then two brief periods of life. Once long enough for copying its contents (how lucky is that) a second time long enough to do an erase and install (what's the chances?). Fairly sure that power (have tried pram and pmu fixes) and video are involved. Horizontal lines and video testing before terminal crash.

Since then, black screen, whizzy fans, cannot target disc.

Any suggestions?

Should i sell it for spares or repair / take it apart and sell it bit by bit / try to diagnose and fix?

I'm no technician but I can do some stuff. But I have replaced the machine long since.

Ta.

Sounds like the symptoms of a logic board failure, which plagued the whole ibook lineup. The g3 ibook I had was covered under the extended warranty but I don't think there was one for the G4s. It may well be an expensive repair if you don't have Applecare and you get it done yourself.

This might help you do it yourself:

The sad truth is that the cost of a repair may be all you'd get for the machine if you sold it so you'd be just as well off throwing it out. The best idea may be to dismantle it and sell the parts. You'd probably get a good price for the screen if it's in good condition.
