How do I get column view to open with wider columns?

My mte is using a Mac and complaining at every step... his new issue is that he has to drag the columns wider every time he opens a new save as window - which i agree is annoying.

Is there a way to make the columns open as wide as the widest entry within the colummn?

Thanks.

Hold down the "option" key when you drag the column's wider or narrower. The columns will stay that width in the future until you change it.

The Mac OS X Finder UI really sucks, IMO, especially the column view.
