Can't Prevent System Changging iPod Options

Has anyone experienced the problem of the system changing the checked items in the Options section of the iPod Summary tab of iTunes? I find that frequently the check mark I place next to "Manually Manage Music and Videos" disappears. Is there something I must do to assure it remains checked? Or, is this a normal function?
