PB G4 replacement of logic board no help

I have a PB G4 15" and had the lower memory slot issue where it was not recognized. I took it to the Apple store and they replaced the logic board under the warranty program. I got it home and guess what I have the same problem. The machine will not boot with the memory in the 1st slot. If I put it in the 2nd slot it boots up fine.

Something other than the memory slot/logic board should be causing this issue. The memory is fine - it checks out OK. Could something on the hard drive be causing this kind of issue? Could a software program alter the kernel in such a way that it would affect the boot process?

Any help or thought would be great.
