Macbook USB drives stopped working
they were literally working one second and not working the next second.
i had my 1g shuffle plugged in, drug the file to the deskop, drug the shuffle to the trash, unplugged the shuffle, plugged in my external mouse and the mouse gets no power. when i plug in the shuffle, the lights flash a bit, but it never shows up on the desktop. both the shuffle and the mouse work on a different computer.
my first guess would be static electricity from me to the computer.
anyone have any other ideas? do i just need to take this into an apple store?
edit: nevermind, i guess it just needed a restart (THANK GOD!) any idea why that would be?

Maybe you waited not lot enough after movig to the trash. You should wait about 5 seconds after you drag a volume to the trash before physically disconnecting it. In those 5 seconds, some data is still written to the USB stick or shuffle. Also reinserting the iPod or shuffle or USB stick too quickly will regularly result in not mounting it. Wait about 15 seconds before reinsertion.
Why that happens, I have no clue, it's just my experience with dozens of USB drives over the years... And I guess a repair is not necessary - if everything works well after the restart.
