I just realized that all of IBMs servers now ship with 2.5" SATA/SAS 15,000 RPM Drives. Damn nice if you ask me. Any ideas on when will APple's Xserves ship with 2.5" SATA/SAS 10,000+ RPM Drives? It sure would be nice to get 4 drives (with RAID options) in a 1u form factor.

    2.5 inches? Not very cost-effective.

Sorry, I don't know if they are 2.5-inches...but they do offer SAS drives...I don't think it's too cost effective either. I don't think they'd be any more reliable either...but that's probably my ignorance talking there!

What do you want? 2.5-inch drives? Not gonna happen. SAS drives? Already an option.

Why not, our Dells contain 2.5" SAS drives.

I suspect that Apple will soon support 2.5" drives if it doesn't already. The industry is moving toward 2.5" SAS enclosures as apposed to 3.5" because the platters were already smaller to begin with. The 3.5" enclosures have tons of wasted space.

Back-story: Massive arrays of drives can suffer from vibration caused by lots of rotating mass. This is especially true of high performance drives spinning at a high rpm. The solution has always been to make the platters smaller. Since the platters are smaller, why not make smaller enclosures.

Even if the chassis sports 3.5" slots, i'd be willing to bet that 2.5" will be made to fit via a simple bracket. Every manufacturer is doing it.

Well, sure, you can do that. Doesn't require Apple's aid. But for the next few years, 2.5-inch drives will remain mainly in the domain of laptops and small-form-factor desktops.

As has already been stated, many server manufacturers are moving to 2.5" drives - our newest Dell servers only have 2.5" SAS drives. I expect Apple to follow suit fairly soon.

This is true of our latest servers from various companies as well.

Our midrange IBM Cluster server has 2.5" HDDs, they are sleek and powerful enough ...
