We all know that Jobs is in communication with the heads of the major record-labels. It is possilbe that he noticed some willingness to consider scrapping DRM. I doubt that there would have been such talks in a round-table discussion (but who knows). I can, however, imagine that this sort of thing might have come up, off the record, as it were, in private one-on-one discussions. Perhaps Jobs thought that the labels (or some of them) would be willing to move if they were prodded a little. Maybe EMI was the reason that Jobs wrote the letter. I guess we'll find out soon enough.
It would be very good news if it turned out to be accurate. It would be even better news if EMI released open mp3 then posted an increase in their next quarterly profit: how quickly would the rest follow suit with $$ in their eyes?
