I want to know how to send and receive fax.

I saw http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/faxing/ but it does not mention anything about hardware.

I have mbp.

Is it required the apple usb modem?

What I should know about it?

Yes, you need the Apple USB modem. Then plug it into the MBP, plug in the phone line, make sure the modem is activated (ticked) in System Preferences --> Network --> Show: Network Port Configurations. Then go to the Print&Fax Preference panel, set your phone number and you should be ready to go.

What if I want to be able to receive fax?

I open mbp, connect modem-telephone line and what else? Should I start an application in order to make mbp ready to receive fax?

In windows, if the winfax pro was not running, the pc cannot receive any faxes.

As far as I remember, incoming faxes are handled automatically. They're printed to the printer of your choice or stored somewhere in the Documents folder or e-mailed. See the Print&Fax preference panel --> Faxing tab for further details, everything is right in there and must only be set up in there.

Of course, the MBP must be running when the fax comes in. I'm not sure if you can set it to wake up from sleep when a fax or phone call comes in. That could be hidden in the Energy Saver settings --> Options.
