Trouble backing up Macbook HD onto external

I have a 160 GB USB external harddrive and tried a program called SuperDuper! to backup my hard drive so I could restore my Macbook back to how it was in case my Windwos install doesn't go too smoothly.

Anyway, I set it to backup my harddrive last night and my Macbook froze about 10% into the backup. I left the computer frozen for about 6 hours in case it was still backing up fine.

I restarted my Macbook (held down power button) and checked the data on the external and only a few of my applications had been copied to the harddrive, no music, movies, documents, etc.

Any ideas as to how I can back up my Macbook without the thing freezing? Isn't there a way to do it in disk utility that might work?

Thanks.

Is your external hard drive "known good", meaning does it work perfectly with other computers?

it's not normal for SD to freeze during a backup. You might want to report this problem to them, they might be able to help.

Maybe take back the drive and get another one.

BTW, Firewire will provide noticeably better performance.
