Internet speed problem revisited

Soooo Ive been trying everything I can think of to fix my internet speed.

Heres the problem as it stands now:

1. Bandwidth tests have me d/l and u/l very fast.

2. When I do download a file, or stream a video, it loads very fast.

3. When I load a webpage such as this site, or any other, it takes forever to finally load.

Any ideas? Seems really a bit strange...

My ISP has slow DNS servers. While bandwidth is pretty high, requesting pages and images from multiple sites used to take some time.

The only way I fixed that was building my own DNS server.

How do you create your own DNS server?

Personally, I grabbed an old computer, installed Ubuntu and BIND and also Webmin.

Webmin is a pain to install for mac, only because you have to install Perl as well.

Bind works well on Ubuntu, but I had problems getting it working for Mac. I think Webmin expects a directory structure that is different than OS X and I never took the time to track down the new locations.

BTW: Webmin is a easy-to-use interface for command line programs. You could skip Webmin alltogether, but you would have to edit text files manually.

    EDIT: Linky.
