Syncing question

Hey, I bought my first mac about a year ago, its a MBP. Looks like I'm going to buy a desktop soon too, probably an iMac. My question, I know that Mac OS X has some type of syncing feature, but I'm not very familiar with it. I want to be able to sync both macs with stuff like address book, ical, music, photos maybe, bookmarks, etc.

I heard that you need .mac to use the syncing feature? I dont know if this is true, but that would be very lame. Thanks in advance!
