Does apple rely entirely on its own products?

I was wandering... what software and hardware tools does apple use for its day-to-day operations? Does it use only macs for financial, design and manufacturing applications? If yes, what software? If no, what does it use?

It is an interesting thought, if it can manage without using competitor's products or no.

Apple, being Apple, most likely uses only Macs for computing. Steve Jobs used NeXT computers before OS X came out, and there is possibly a supercomputer used for design, but almost everything can be made on Macs. Apple makes no Linux products, and its limited line of products for Windows probably can be done via Boot Camp and Parallels. But I'm sure they have limited numbers of other computers for testing, as well as other MP3 players and peripherals.

The manufacturers in Asia are probably using special embedded systems designed for manufacture.

I think the industrial design team has to use PCs. A lot of the top CAD programs aren't available on the Mac.

CAD applications was one of the product categories I had in mind. Day-to-day bussiness and financial applications are another.

I know they use(d) PeopleSoft, which is an enterprise level financials, HR & CRM suite (depending on which modules you buy). Shortly after they started using PSoft, Safari became an officially supported browser for the PeopleSoft platform.

Here's a screencap I took back in '04. This shows the PSoft v8.4 menu on the Apple website (this menu disappeared not too long after I took this shot).

Do they still use a Cray?

They are bound to have other manufacturers machines in places for testing at the like. In various places in IBM/Lenovo , using an apple mac is a tolerated ( tolerated, but not necessarily supports ) practice.

Well they use Macs in their stores for registers, so I'd guess they custom make their own a accounting and inventory control software that can work on their Macs. It be interesting to see what kind of units they give out at Apple HQ. Are they Mac Pros or iMacs? I'd guess iMacs for basic stuff and Mac Pros when more power is needed. I'd also guess everybody is hooked up to Xserve.
