I wanted to view a stream on a webpage that streams with Real Networks Real Plyer. My RealOne Player beta had expired for OSX and now they have a free 14 day trial that during regestration requires credit card etc. and is stated that if you do not cancle before 14 days you will be charged 9.95 per month.

Good Bye Real Networks.

FLUSH....

This is one sure fire way to shrink ones marketshare in this area.

How many here are actually going to pay for this?

I sure will not.

I had the same problem in that my beta had expired, but instead of downloading the full trial version I downloaded the free version. I'm not sure what the differences are, but I'm still able to view streaming movies having not paid anything (or handed over my credit card details).

Perhaps it's like QuickTime, where you pay for the Pro version which gives you extra features.

i also managed to find a free version of real1. they are really good at hiding the free version though. you have to look very closely at the download page.

I just did this... It is the same one I have and when you try to use it has a dialogue box that informs you that "This player has expired"

    What is up?

The charge is just for the premium subscriptions to sites that have that - CNN comes to mind. But yes, I downloaded the new beta recently and it makes you think you have to pay the fee. There's another link for the free version download.

I am not sure that there actually will be a free version of RealPlayer (RealOne) for OSX. The Beta 1 version was completely free, but expires after a certain time. The Beta 2 version initially indicates that it is free, but if you look more closely, it is just a "free trial" of 14 days. They ask for your credit card number for this "free" trial and will automatically start charging you $9.95 a month unless you cancel within the trial period. Eek!

If I am wrong and there actually is a free version , then I would love to know about it. Actually, I would not object to paying something ($50-$100) for the RealOne software, but I am not going to pay a monthly fee. I know that a lot of software companies would like to move their business in this direction - i.e., selling monthly software licences instead of a flat fee for the sofware - but they won't get my business.

AFAIK it's only the SuperPass that costs money. I have no problems using Beta 2 and I haven't submitted any credit card numbers.

I stand corrected. It is indeed only the SuperPass that costs. Thank you very much.
