Help configuring ethernet settings on imac!

Hi guys,

I'll be honest, I'm more of a pc guy, but my roomate's powerbook recently stop functioning so I bought her a older IMAC off craigslist for now. It's currently running OS9.1.

So I have a belkin router that 5 wireless computers are on, and one wired. I connected an ethernet cord to the imac but it's not working.

When I have it automatically detect dhcp settings, the numbers for the ip, router all seem very... "wrong" like, my computer is 192.168.2.3 , the numbers that the computer had detected were way off. So I'm wondering is that an apple thing?

Pretty much I'm wondering if I manually set it, what should I put in the fields:

dhcp client ID?

ip address?

router address?

server ID?

I use to have a powerbook, but OSX was a bit easier... I have never put in the dhcp client ID in any computer so I"m not sure what it is. Below is a screen shot, can you guys figure it out from it?

I'm pretty sure the ipaddress to the mac is the .17 one.

Do other computers work with the same ethernet cable and internet connection?

How do you set it to automatically detect dhcp settings? I suppose through the TCP/IP control panel, right?

And you should not. Even Mac OS 9 can handle DHCP automatically.

I am perhaps mistaken, but does not the Apple System Profiler provide you the hardware addresses of the machine and its components?

PS: please try either to reduce the size of your picture or make it just a link.

My advice: Set the mac to use DHCP, set ethernet port to auto everything, and then check your cables. If that doesn't work... perhaps make sure MAC filtering on the router is disabled.

There really isn't anything else you can troubleshoot on a mac. I'm unaware of any consumer router that isn't plug-n-play for a Mac. If it isn't working, there is a 99% chance it is a setting in the router or bad cables.
