But what they aren't telling you is the story leaked by the programmer and told by Leander Kahney is also a "canary trap". By posting the link here you have tipped off Steve's cloak and dagger team. This is my last post before I rip the internet connections out of my home.
It might have been a canary trap but I don't know for sure.
However, there was still a real product that Apple was trying to keep under wraps. The Asteroid rumors talked about a relationship and with Apogee Digital and some piece of hardware. Well the Apogee Ensemble sure seems to fit this rumor pretty good. The only reason why people don't connect the Asteroid rumor with the Ensemble is because Apple didn't release it under their own name.
I am surprised how the Asteroid made big news on rumors sights yet the Ensemble hasn't. Between the Ensemble and the bigger Symphony system by Apogee, Apple is going head-to-head with Digidesign and ProTools. ProTools is the audio standard today and happens to be owned by Avid - yeah the same competitor to Final Cut Pro. So Apple is pretty serious about the whole audio and video thing.
With the probability of a Final Cut upgrade and possible high end Final Cut Extreme, Apple's relationship with Apogee might even get deeper. I bet Apogee is supplying Apple with the high end audio convertors that it will use in their soon to be released Final Cut Extreme. I think Apple is pretty protective of this relationship and doesn't want the rumor sites leaking all this info. A canary trap is possible but if so, it only shows how important Apple considers all this audio stuff to be. And it seems rumor sites haven't realized the importance of this yet.
Surely, if it was a canary trap (or, at least, if it was an EFFECTIVE canary trap), they wouldn't have had to go to expensive litigation to find out who leaked it, eh?
There is no need to sue if the canary trap worked. Apple would find out the source of the leak and plug it fast with a pink slip. However, it did put a scare into the rumor sites and stopped the flow of imformation at least some.
Anybody notice how Apple is starting to introduce some of their products ahead of time? First the new OS, then AppleTV, then the iPhone - this is starting to be a trend.

Am I missing the point here, or what?!
