Data Transfer Slower After Using A Router

Hey everyone. I recently got a wifi router. Of course its the Linksys WRTG54 or whatever. I've noticed data transfer rates specifically with Transmission is slower now. I used to get speeds ranging from 4kbps to 95kbps when wired directly to the cable modem. Now i get at most 1kbps and thats generally its high point. Is there anything I can do to speed this back up? This happened when I was hooked into the router both wired and wirelessly with both my iBook and my eMac.

    *IS iT* the Linksys WRTG54 or not? "whatever" sounds vague..??
