main hard drive suddenly invisible in finder

well i was working away as usual last night, and now all of a sudden my main hard drive is invisible in the finder... well at least it doesn't appear on the desktop or the sidebar although i can browse to it and everything is otherwise working as normal. bizarre. i've googled around and have tried the following solutions to no avail:

repair permissions

repair drive (disk utility)

techtool

finder preferences

rebooting

etc.etc. when i enable viewing invisible files, it appears, but not with normal settings. no, there is no . at the start of the volume name and i've also checked for anything strange in the volumes folder.

does anyone have any suggestions for this irritating little problem?

thanks!

    Try checking your Finder prefs.

    Finder -> Preferences -> General

    Check the box for 'Hard Drives' under things to show on the Desktop.

    Finder -> Preferences -> Sidebar

    Check the box for 'Hard Drives'

    Better?

    already tried that turned it off, restarted finder, turned it back on, restarted finder. no change

    the problem seems to be that the hard drive has become an "invisible" file for no explicable reason. turning on viewing invisible files makes it reappear

    Drat. I was hoping you'd just overlooked the obvious. \

    Here are some tips on how to flip that invisible bit back:

    thanks for your help! i was eventually able to solve the problem using a program called file buddy (http://www.skytag.com/filebuddy/) via the article you posted. lord knows how it ever got set to invisible, but it's visible again now!
