RAID mirroring question, about how well it handles drive failure

If a drive in RAID mirror array fails on OS X, can the system still continue to operate with the failed drive in place? Has anyone seen this work properly without the computer stalling out?

The reason I ask is that I had a drive in a stripe array fail and SMARTReporter and Disk Utility didn't even want to function, they just hang before I can even see the status of the drives. As such, I couldn't figure out which drive had failed just using software. Just using trial and error, I shut down the computer, removed a drive and tried to see if Disk Utility can start up properly, shut down and repeat.
