German keyboard typing like an American

I recently bought an apple keyboard that has the german characters and etc. but my computer recognizes it as an American keyboard. Is there a way to make my computer recognize that it is a german keyboard and use the german letters when I type them and not the american ones that it thinks should be?

I think you need to set your character set using the Input Menu in the International Preferences. If you switch keyboards, then you will have to change it back. If you switch often, you'll want to set the input menu in the menu bar for fast changes.
