iPhone and Foreign Language Text Support

When I return to the states later this year, I need to start up another phone plan and the iPhone is not very tempting to me because I only use a phone for calling and text messaging, never photos or music. However, since I have a lot of friends in Japan and it is very common to use cell phone e-mail just like text messaging I am interested if the iPhone will have Japanese text support. As long as I can read it I would be happy. I can always reply using the alphabet.

Also, just being able to view web pages in Japanese would be enough that I would consider an iPhone over just the cheapest phone with the longest battery life.

Ideally I would wonder if Apple Japan ever came out with an iPhone, if I could just buy that an plug a sim card into it? I have seen people using Vodaphone(now Softbank) phones in the US since some models use sim cards.

I'd be enourmously surprised if it didn't have rich support for "exotic" languages. There's nothing inside the software in iPhone that suggests that it wouldn't have anything but full support. The whole point of not having any buttons and everything in software is precicely this.

Well it is running OS X and that has excellent support for Latin based Languages and Japanese and Chinese... so I don't see why not. But It hasn't been stated specifically and for all we know Apple may drop languages to save space.
