Mixed RAM

I have an extra gig of RAM I'm going to put in the wife's Mac Book which already has 512. Considering the RAM likes to be paired is there a preferred way to mix it? Maybe put the Gig in the first slot and the 512 in the second? Why would it matter if you say it does?

    Not a particularly big deal in a MacBook. Just put the second stick in and go with it.

    Silly me. It was 2 256 RAM cards. I put the 1 Gig in the first slot and one 256 in the second.
