External hard drive woes

I have recently connected an external firewire hard disk to my mac mini g4. All was well untill I upgraded from OS X.4.8 to OS X.4.9 since then my mac runs fine for about 5 mins and then has a kernel panic and asks me to restart. My Mac still runs fine if I boot from my internal drive which still runs OS X.4.8. Any clues as to what my problem might be?

    Have you checked your system log files?
