They have taken over the living room, they have an amazing photo program, they have the lead on all smart phones (and mobile phones in general)....

Why not take over the Photo graphical world, with a digital camera. I'm sure Apple could whip up a very nice digital camera, any one else think so too. That should definitely be their next project.

Yeah The Apple TV just launched and the iPhone isn't out till June. I guess both were a huge success already though because apparently Apple now owns the Living Room and lead on all Smart Phones (and mobile phones in general) without even having a product on the market.

    About the camera. No.

Apple has definitely not 'taken over the living room'. Honestly, the Apple TV started shipping yesterday and it is very unproven. Very few people have HDTVs and fewer of them are going to be interested right out of the gate in buying a device that can transfer videos to their TV. Check back in a year and see how the Apple TV is doing before declaring victory.

I wish this were true but very few people have ever seen an iPhone, never mind used one. There's no doubt that it has a lot of potential, but let's face it, the iPhone is expensive and it's locked to Cingular/AT&T. We don't even know the details of the plans that Cingular/AT&T will offer with the iPhone, it could push it out of many people's price ranges. Considering that we won't even see the iPhone until at least June, it's way too early to say that they have 'the lead'.

Apple used to be in the digital camera market with the QuickTake. In fact, it was one of the first digital cameras on the market. When Steve Jobs returned to Apple, he restructured the entire product line to try and turn the company around. One of the first things that he did was kill off the QuickTake.

We know that the iPhone will have a built in camera, and it wouldn't surprise me if we saw a camera built into the next generation iPod. Apple is all about convergence these days, after all. If the next generation iPod has an iPhone like screen, I wouldn't be surprised to see it have a built-in camera.

I don't know about a standalone professional digital camera though. What incentive would Apple have for entering the crowded digital camera market and what could they do better?

IMO the camera market is doing fine with Canon, Nikon, Sony and others making fine product. There are no "glaring" issues for Apple to fix IMO.

Now if you're talking 'bout an image editor/creator then I'm all for it. Photoshop can't be the only game in town forever.

Actually I was watching a Google Video this morning, Keynote Bloopers and Steve Jobs was having trouble with his camera.

The problem you have here is that unlike the mobile phone market where the iPod's success will be able to help the iPone launch, cameras are a very different model. A point and shoot compact digital may do ok, especially if it had iPod integration, but the 'proper' camera market doesn't really have that much room for growth. Brand loyalty is very important. I for one have spent years with Canon and my lens collection reflects that. Unless Apple brought out a DSLR body which was compatible with Canon lenses, I would never have an interest in changing my system. The same would go for almost any professional or amateur photographer who has spent time building up a comprehensive system.

Well They could make the back of it all one screen and use touch controls which would be new to the camera world because i haven't seen many cameras yet with that ability.

It's not that new. Many digital video cameras, with the flip-out displays and Hi-8 tapes, have touch-screen displays.

I think Apple should concentrate on getting a better hold on their current markets before they spread to any others.

I've seen plenty of compact digitals with a touch screen. Granted Apple could do more with it I'm sure.. perhaps onboard editing and multitouch, but I still don't see a decent business model there for Apple.

I say leave camera making to the camera makers, like Nikon, Canon, Pentax, et al. There's a lot to know about good camera making that doesn't involve software or touchscreens.

Six years ago, a lot of people would have said there were no glaring issues with mp3 players. Then came the iPod. I'd say ease of use is one thing that definitely needs to be addressed. User friendly is not something I would call even the "point & shoot" cameras outside of fully automatic mode. I've used cameras and SLRs for 30 years, so I'm comfortable with the terms, but most people really have no idea what f5.6, 150mm focal length, .75EV bracketing, ISO 200, tungsten white balance, etc. mean. Apple's dedication to the user experience could give amateurs and snapshooters all the control pros or prosumers have without the complexity and the jargon.

    should be...

To revolutionize the classroom. I know they sold PowerSchool but dream about this for a second....

Each student gets a tablet like PC. Built in WiFi, Bluetooth, SmartTouch, InkWell, etc.

Custom "books" could be created by the textbook publishers. It would be interactive with movies and pictures and could be updated automatically via WiFi as new information becomes available. Current Events would be taught on demand. Classes would have they very latest information on each subject, rather than learning from text books that are ten to fifty years old. Think of what this could do for language class.

Testing and homework would be done with InkWell and forums and automatically when the student walks into class it would sync up their data with the servers and grade their work. Very little overhead for the teacher, and no more excuses "the dog ate my homework". Throw in an iSight with limited contacts (students only) and they are able to communicate with fellow classmates about getting help with homework.

This is the classroom of tomorrow and Apple have all of the technology to make this work, they just have to build it.

Of course the student would have to take care of the machine and the parents would have to put down a deposit.

I know this is a pure pipedream but this would be a true push in education and would save time, money and overhead.
