15gb iPod Won't Work!

I just bought a 15gb 3rd Generation iPod from eBay. It worked splendidly until I made the huge mistake of OKing an update from iTunes. I don't have the power adapter and now the iPod won't work(it keeps telling me to plug it into the power adapter). I think this is very wrong of Apple to basically force people into buying an adapter just to finish an update. Is there anything I can do to fix the iPod without buying a power adapter I do not wish to purchase? I'd hate to think my iPod is ruined because of a stupid update.
