using desktop extender.... please help

okay. i am going to put another old display a 17" crt display on my iMac. i want to know how will it look if i use it to extend my desktop. also when i do get another decent display will it look okay with desktop extender. what i mean is i dont want to have one window in one screen, one screen in another. i want to have two screens acting as one big one.
