I would like the ability to break-off an existing tab into its own window, or to be able to attach an existing window to another existing window as a tab (ie: combine two windows into one tabbed window)...

the UI for it would be:

combining windows - grab the proxy icon of the window, and drop it onto the tabbing area

splitting windows - drag the tab off of the window

whaddya think? think this would make any sense system wide?

Grad Student you're on to something here. Tab Browsing is great but there's still plenty of ideas that need to happen. I like yours.

Sounds like the feature that prompted Adobe to sue Macromedia. Adobe apps (and their ugly non-standard tabs) can do this, and i think Macromedia's still can.

TIFFany has has a similar device with its inspector. You can choose to float the panel, view one inspector pane at a time via a pop-up, and/or detach as many of these panes as possible.

In Chimera you can do this by right clicking on the tab and choosing "Move Tab to New Window"
