Should Apple consider an "Accidential Protection Plan"

My girlfriend just decided not to buy an Apple MacBook Pro. Not because of price, I should her that MacBook Pro's just come with more stuff -- and when you add that to a GateWay/HP, you get a more expensive product.

However, she wants a touch screen Mac for note-taking (and she thinks its cool). I told her a Apple version of that should be releasing by the time she gets the money (she doesn't have it right now) -- which may or may not be true. However, the killer is...if she spilt a drink on your laptop, she would be screwed. And Gateway and HP (and Dell) cover those things.

So, my question: Should Apple do the same?

While Apple does not technically cover such things, I've found that Apple is more than willing to take back damaged products that were damaged because of user error/accident.

    Story:

My friend went into an Apple store with his iPod to get it fixed. Upon exiting the store after it was fixed, he accidentally dropped his iPod on the ground. The screen broke, and the Apple Rep who was working with saw this and said, "Looks like we dropped your iPod during repair accidentally...", we'll have to give you a new one. So they gave him a replacement iPod and took back the one with the broken screen.

Also, other vendors (i.e. Best Buy) have plans that cover accidental damage.

As far as touch screen, this is expensive, but see here:

I actually heard of the Modbook, and asked about it on these forums. I honestly have mixed reactions...is the touch screen worth the extra penny? It all depends, I guess.

:-D But thanks!!! Also, do you -- or anyone else -- know if Apple's computers will be in Best Buy anytime soon, and how many? I saw a story, and it said something like 200 stores...but didn't say where/when (or I over looked it).

I don't know details about Best Buy + Apple stuff. You can always check online at bestbuy.com -- they should sell Apple products via their website as well... (the sites down right now so I can't verify for sure).

As far as the Modbook does, it could be great for some people. Personally, I see it as a relatively extraneous technology right now. I type faster than I write and I don't have much use for drawing, etc. And it does come at a premium because of the fact that the company that makes the Modbook is paying for the Apple laptop and then on top of that, making mods which cost money.

Yep, I realize thats why the price is more. However, being college students...we always look for what we con afford, you know?

It's another reason I am waiting (personally) until Apple comes out with a touch screen mac...if they ever do. It might be cheaper.
