Help with installing classic

I am having trouble with installing OS 9 for using classic apps in OS X on my clamshell iBook SE (Firewire). I am running 10.3.9 and have the OS 9.0 install disk that came with the iBook. I know I need 9.1 for doing classic through OS X. Is is possible to install and update to 9.1 or 9.2?
What currently happens when I try to install OS 9 is that after checking the disk, and all the other stuff it does before actually installing, it starts trying to install and then comes up with an error stating it cannot update the system software. I am a bit confused.
