Hello, new to the forums and i guess you could also say to apple computers. I am going to college in the fall and have decided to pick up a macbook or mbp in about a month. I know a fair amount about apple stuff, but still have a few questions.

New laptops

I am going to get either the macbook or macbook pro, and I know that there will probably be updates to each of these when there is WWDC, so I was just going to wait until after that to get a laptop. Will apple release updates to the laptops for sure, and should I wait at all to get a laptop, in case there are problems with the first release of the laptops. Also price isn't an issue, so is it really worth it to get the pro? I might do some video editing in a few years, but for now I am only going to be using it for AIM/email stuff, facebook, and movie watching.

One last question about installing programs/games. I know how windows works and how the game is downloaded to the Hard drive, but is installation on the apple just putting in the game and it runs? Anywhere I can get some info on that would be great. Also I have a game that I am going to use on my new apple, Myst 3 and 4, and it says it works with windows and apple. What is the current version of OS X? It said works with 10.2 and 10.3, and i'm sure they have released 10.5 or something like that by now. The game will work, right?

Thanks for the help. The last time I was at the apple store at the mall, the people weren't very helpful. I know this isn't the case with all apple employees, but they were all about why windows sucked and couldn't answer any of my questions.

If you want gaming, you would be better off with the pro version. The Macbook is fine for everything else but they put low performance graphics cards in there. The updated ones should be faster but not likely enough for decent gaming. If you only like older games and ones like Myst then I'd expect the Macbook would perform adequately (maybe not Myst 5 though).

Nope, you usually have to install it just like Windows. Sometimes you can just copy it onto your drive by dragging the program over.

Yes the games work but those Myst games were written for PPC machines so they run under Rosetta on the new machines. This makes them run much slower. Even on an iMac with an X1600 GPU, I've seen Myst 5 stutter quite badly. Your best bet for gaming is to use Windows. You can install Windows on the new Macs just for gaming.
