My iMac is unresponsive

My iMac become inresponsive and now when I click on items (such as dock icons), the text appears when i hover over the icon but when i click it, it remains unresponsive. This is the same when I try to press the maximise/close buttons at the top left of each window.



I've tried resetting the SMU and wondered what else could be done to resolve the problem?



My friend had the same problem which was resolved when he simply restarted his computer, after restarting several times the problem still hasn't been resolved.



Has anyone got any advice?

    Try booting holding the shift key and see if you have the same problem.
