iBook Hard Drive Failure (x2) and Assorted Issues
Hey all, I'm new here. Basically, I purchased my iBook G4 14'' new in Sept of 2005. (Currently out of warranty) Right away, I started to have problems. I have gotten 1 Hard Drives replaced. 2 Logic Boards, 1 Keyboard, and 2 "Repair Level 1" over the time I've owned the computer. Recently, after waking up from sleep, my iBook would have a blank Airport display, even though there were plenty there. (Fixed with May 01 update. I was a day late). So, after seeing a blank Airport display, I would simply restart, and then, the Airport logo in the top of the screen would simply dissapear. Another restart or two, and it was back and running. Last Sunday, it would not appear, even after about 15 restarts. Then, after I repaired disc permissions (It fixed something like "securelogin"), I could not access my "accounts" folder in System Prefs, it would say something along the lines of it didn't exist, and could not open. I tried to repair permissions again, but instead of asking me to type in my password, it said to type in the Admin's (me) name + password. I did, and it did not recognize me. I could still log in or log out with out a problem. Sunday evening, I bring it to the Apple Store, they say they need to do an archive and install, I say fine, and they take it in. Next afternoon, I get a voicemail saying my HD was failing (for the 2nd time) and they had to abort the A & I, and simply gave the computer back to me. They said try to copy info myself. Gee, thanks. I get home, and am greeted by a login window that refuses to take anything. I call, they blame the HD. uhhh, ok...sure... I bring it back a few days later (after calling several times) and they agree to transfer my info to their external drive, and install a new internal HD and copy the info over for a reduced charge. I stupidly let them know I have fairly recent DVD backups of iTunes and iPhoto, and they say they shouldn't need to try to get my photos. I agreed, and purchased a FireWire 250GB LaCie external drive ($99) so I could do more complete backups next time. My computer should be ready this Tuesday, the 8th.
My Questions:
should I have any trouble with the DVDs I used to backup the stuff?
The computer has been taken into repair about 5-6 times since 9/2005. Most companies, like Best Buy, gives you a new computer after 4th repair. Why dosesn't Apple do this? My apple store has been very unhelpful, and the staff isn't as trained as they should be.
The LaCie drive I bougth has "LaCie 1-Click backup". Is this any good? Can I boot from it? Should I get an app like "superduper"?
How can I prevent a 3rd HD failure? My computer sometimes runs hot (~140-150F according to iStat Nano). I usually have Safari, iTunes and iChat open. I don't open all apps @ once, or do any intensive procedure with other apps open.
Thanks very much all for listening, and I am open to any comments or suggestions.
