Where are the icons of the applications saved?

I have changed the icons of some apps (mail, exploiter, quiktime, imovie etc etc etc) - now i want to substitute them. In finder > applications folder clicking on hte prog that i want to change the icon ( and then apple-i and on there paste the icon i want ) does not work. Is that because i can't change twice the same icon, or because i have used candy bar? If it's because of candy bar how do i uninstall it COMPETELLY???

or is a solution go to finder > applications > the app i want to change > show contents > and there cahnge the icon? how do i locate the icons? where are they kept? i want to get rid of the wrong icons.

this is a bug in the finder. If you already have a custom icon on a app, and you try to "overwrite" it with a new one, it sometimes doesn't accept it.

The solution to this is very easy: Just delete the icon first in the information window, then reapply. (closing the window after deleting the icon may be necessary)

The original icon is stored in the application itself, most time under /iPulse.app/Contents/Resources/iPulse.icns/.

edit: found the KB article again: <a href="http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107343"; target="_blank">Mac OS X 10.2: Pasting Custom Icons Over Custom Icons Does Not Always Work</a>

<img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" /> It was easy to replace icons for my folder of files and even for iTunes Music's folder. They're now in my finder task bar menu...but Computer, Home and Applications? Seems impossible to easily change them without tinkering with the system...which I'll never do.

It sucks because the Computer icon is the new iMac...and I have an "old" iMac Graphite SE (an icon of which I used to replace the HD icon...). And that stinking ugly Home icon...sooo Windows...

But any quick and easy routes to change them would be nice...

the quickest route is CandyBar from <a href="http://www.iconfactory.com/cb_home.asp"; target="_blank">Iconfactory</a>.

I wish that Apple made the 'My Computer' icon recognize which Mac you are on and adjust the icon accordingly. I'm sure that isn't very hard for them to do. It could even do something about this at OS install time if you are worried about bloat from using code to auto-detect every start-up or something like that. Of course, the 'at OS install' option would be annoying to people that install all their machines from ghost images.

i said that i have that, and that i don't want to use that anymore. so how do i install it off on a way it leaves nothing 'frost'?

i did resolve the icon problem though. i keep preferring to change the icons manually. but thanx still.

Your icons are left in the 'frost' theme? I'm assuming that you are trying to get rid of it. I thought that CandyBar had a 'revert to default' option to change everything back to the Apple defaults if you are triyng to get rid of 'frost'.
