What are the drawbacks of buying a mac laptop in the US when I am based in the UK? They are cheaper in the US.
The warranty for mobile computers is international so you should be fine on that front and you get universal power adaptors. I don't really see that there would be any problem but you can ask in the Apple store, unless you are buying online over there. I don't know why there is such a huge price difference, it's about £150 difference for a Macbook isn't it?

The only problem I have really is posting it over here as I live in the UK and am not planning a trip to America any time soon.
So do you know if all the configurations, etc. are the same? Are they exactly the same model with minor changes like keyboard and language settings?
