I have a folder that I need to share with a friend outside my home network. I was thinking of opening an ftp share for her, but the process looks a little too indepth.

What would you guys recommend to share a read only folder with someone out your home network? Is there an app that can help since I would prefer to be more hands off than knee deep in the terminal.

I would suggested turning on 'Remote login' in the sharing pane of System Preferences. Once on, if your friend has an account on your system, she can use sftp (or Putty on Windows) to login and get the files. The trick will be routing port 22 from the outside through your home router to the machine to which you want to give her access. See you router manual for how to do this. Once this is done she can

    sftp <her account name>@<your external IP>

she enters the password when asked and can then get/put files where she has permission.

Is there a way to limit her access so she can only sftp and not have regular login access to the machine?
