imac locks up on shutdown

i have an imac running osx10.4 and when i shut down the screen turns blue the little wheel symbol stops tunring and wont let me do anything else, this does not happen every time though, has any body got any ideas that may help

    I can't help, but my iMac CD 2GHz, 10.4.9 does the same thing. The behavior is not consistent, but it seems to happen more frequently the longer the machine has been running.



    Its not a great solution, but I manually power down from the button in the rear.
