The OS disks that ship by themselves will work on any Mac (that's capable of running that version of the OS.)
Except Intel Macs. The retail OS 10.4 disks will only work with the PPC Macs. You need the System Restore disks that shipped with the Intel Macs to reinstall their OS. When 10.5 is released you should be able to install the OS onto any Mac that supports OS 10.5.

I'll agree with that.
But since the poster is considering buying the OS, I would assume that he doesn't have an Intel Mac, or else he'd already have install disks for 10.4
