today i went to future shop to compare the feel of the macbook and macbook pro, and i've finally decided that i prefere the macbook. they felt the same to me besides the temperature difference because of the better conduction of the aluminum, but i have a question. when i opened safari, and went to the top left hand corner of the screen, the background went a shade of grey and there was a grey pop up in the middle of the screen but safari was still white. what is this and can it be disabled?

edit: also, the macbook seemed quite a bit heavier than the macbook pro, what's up with that?

What was the "popup" in the middle of the screen? If everything but Safari dimmed, then it was Expose, with the top-left screen corner set to activate it.

MacBooks weigh 5.1 lb. A 15" MacBook pro weighs 5.6 lb. I'm not sure why you thought the MacBook was heavier, but it's not.

That thing you experienced is called Exposé. My guess is the computer had "Active Screen Corners" turned on, Safari was the only app or window open, and your cursor traveled into a screen corner, and yes you can turn it off.. but once you see what it is and how it can be used, you'll never want to be without it again.

The MacBook is 5.1 pounds, and the 15" MacBook Pro is 5.6 pounds weight.. twas a trick of the brain.

update, i went back today, and i did it once again to see what was in the little pop up and it just had the info of the webpage. whatever, if it can be disabled i'll be happy.

    isn't expose the widget program?

anddddd, once again, the macbook felt heavier. i looked up the weight on my own last night and yeah i saw the weights and the macbook is lighter, but mabye future shop installed some other battery in it or something. i don't know. i'm like 100 percent sure that the macbook is heavier.

You'll be happy. This is not enabled by default, you have to enable it. However, just FYI...I never saw the advantage of Expose for many, many months after I got my first Mac. I have since come to find it indispensable. If you give it some time and really learn how to use Expose, I think you'll find it a great tool.

    No, you're thinking of Dashboard.

It takes all open windows on your system, and shrinks them so you can see them all, live, at once. Click on any window, and it takes you to that window, in the appropriate application.

What's *REALLY* useful is that you can do this mid-drag in a drag-and-drop. Select something (text, image, doesn't matter) in any window, and while holding down the mouse button, trigger Expose, drag it to the window you want to drop it in, hold a sec, it'll bring the window forward, and drop where you want. One smooth action, between any two windows in any two apps.

Basically, instead of the one-after-another linear ordering of Windows Alt-Tab, this lets you jump immediately to the window you want, no matter how many you have.

    Apple's page: http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/expose/

And a movie showing it: http://www.apple.com/macosx/theater/expose.html

meh, i'm old school, i'll probably end up doing what i do now. just bring the window to the front and drag something in. is there someway just to enable it for like a mouse shortcut rather than the corner of the screen shortcut? because i don't like the fact that if i put it there by mistake it freezes the screen and i have to click on the screen and blah blah.

Yup. Go to System Preferences -> Dashboard & Expose, and you can customize what the screen corners do.

You'll change your mind when Spaces arrives in conjunction with Expose.

    Meh, Spaces..

Hey Rich, one example of where exposé comes in very very handy, is when your composing a new Mail and you wan't to add a photo that you have on your desktop; I set the bottom-right corner of my Mac's screen to 'show desktop' when I'm writing the new message and want to add that photo, I bring my mouse to the bottom corner of my screen, all my windows move out of screen, I grab the photo, hit that screen corner again and drop that photo on the message.. takes literally 2 seconds when you get use to it, and it's a seamless, natural experience. I could live without it, but I certainly wouldn't like to, I like exposé a lot.

If you're curious, you can set every corner of your screen to do the same thing, or all different things. I have all four corners set; top left = screensaver, top right = selected applications windows, bottom left = all open windows, bottom right = show desktop. All four options are just a flick of the wrist away, simple.

It's not set as a hot corner action by default.

Also, you may be 100% sure about the weight of MBs and MBPs, but you're also 100% wrong. There is no heavier battery for either one. Unless the MBP was missing its battery or optical drive (which is very doubtful) the MBP is noticeably heavier.

The MacBook has a higher density so that can make it seem heavier.

Density is a ratio of weight to volume. I just calculated the denisty of the 2 and they are very close so nevermind.

The Macbook is about the perfect size laptop. This is from someone who likes to have the biggest monitor possible at the highest resolution it'll go to, and who once had a Toshiba Libretto. Well, I still do, but I dropped it one day and the screen cracked.

As for Exposé, you'll find that to be awesome! I use it all the time, especially that mid drag thing mentioned earlier. I have the two bottom corners to be Exposé All Windows and Desktop and it's very useful if you're doing many things at once. My Mighty Mouse's "fourth button" is mapped to All Windows as well, which means that any window is available with a squeeze. Well, any window in the current desktop since I use VirtueDesktops to do multi-desktop on Mac OS.

    Let's go Lepoard and Spaces!

If your interested I found this to speed up this process. I find it much friendlier with the faster response times.

OK so this does it - speed up the spring delay in expose

    defaults write com.apple.dock wvous-spring-delay -int 20

    killall Dock

Where the 20, as best I can tell, is in milli-seconds. Obviously it won't go in 20 msec but I put 20, 200 and 2000 in for the number and didn't percieve much of a change before 2000 and then it was about a 2 second count.
