Why no 8-core Xserve?

I will need to replace an SGi server soon and want to put in another XServe. It's to run Xinet WebNative.

A Quad would probably suffice but I'd be gutted if an 8 core came out shortly after, especially as our company thinks a server should last 5 years.

Now that 8 core Mac Pros have been out a while, is there any reason why the XServe is still only Quad?

Am I right in thinking an 8 core XServe is just around the corner?

Or, should I consider putting in an 8 core Mac pro instead - the extra expansion would come in handy but I'd worry over the lack of dual power supplies.

Well right now, you're limited to the Mac Pro. I don't think there will be an 8-core Xserve soon. It might be too hot to cool in the Xserve enclosure? Moreover, I don't think the server software — since Leopard's been delayed — would provide any real speed benefit over the current hardware. That's why I don't think Apple's in any great rush.

This might have something to do with it:

    1.6-2.66ghz DC woodcrest 65w TDP

3.0ghz DC woodcrest TDP 80W TDP

    1.6-2.33ghz QC cloverton 80W TDP

    2.66ghz QC cloverton 120w TDP

    3.0ghz QC cloverton 150W TDP

The higher end clovertons might be too hot for the xserve. Then again, the 3.0ghz x5365 is also a part in very limited production. There might not be enough to go around. Either way, wait until early August if you can.

I think we'll see the first 8 core 1U Apple servers with Penryn.
