Dual Monitor question - MBP

I'm sure this is somewhere else on the forum (or elsewhere), and I just wanted to confirm. This should be a simple answer. You can run dual monitors with the MacBook Pro, right? I mean it in the way where the MacBook screen is used as one monitor and an outside flat-panel (I have vga/dvi) for the 2nd. I thought I read that you can extend the desktop and/or mirror, but I just wanted to confirm.

I'm about to purchase a MBP, so I'm trying to learn as much as I can

The 30" ACD works fine as a 2nd monitor under OSX but I have to make it the only monitor under XP or suffer graphics glitches. Original 17" MBP. Probably a bootcamp driver thing.
