I always wondered why Apple is so afraid to release a lower cost tower like system. If they had a $800-$1000 tower I would be all over it. Most people do not need the Mac Pro power, especially at well over $2000. I guess Apple's argument would be that a $800-$1000 tower would take away iMac sales. Not true if they drop the 17 inch iMac. Then the 20 inch iMac could stay at $1499 and everyone is happy. I only wish I could understand their logic. The Mac Mini seems to be stuck in this universe as well, it hasn't been updated in ages and is seriously overpriced at this point. Perhaps Apple needs a Mini replacement that extends up a bit higher in their range, a new model starting at Mini pricing of about $500 and reaching up to about $1000 all decked out.
Im thinking, no iMac 17", Mac Mini gone, maybe a smaller MacbookPro
I would disagree on the mini. That is just about the most vesatile little box on the planet.
I am opening an office in a few months and all the user stations are going to be minis. Plus, my iTunes/AppleTV jukebox setup is going to be running off a mini. They just rock for being able to have a system tucked away somewhere.

I agree, but I wonder if Apple is thinking of a new form factor the same size as the new Airport Extreme? Perhaps they could pack in a graphics card then, and Core 2 Duos.
The rumours of the impending demise of the mini make me nervous.

according to bill gates they're both out of date
then again , what would he know ?
What about apple expo paris? or any given tuesday between now and then.
Apple doesn't need to roll out on the big dates anymore. They can call a press event and pack the house.
Killing time here...
MacBook 13"
MacBook Pro 15", 17"
MacBook Pro Nano 11"
iMac 17"
iMac Pro 20", 24"
Mac Mini [$599, $799]
Mac Midi [$1499, $1799] [Basically half a Mac Pro]
Mac Pro [$2199, $2499, $3299, $3999]
Cinema Displays 20", 24", 30"
$800 to $1500 is still a big gap and a $800 desktop with laptop parts?
drop the mini and
make the mid-tower base price $600 with on board video and desktop parts.
Mac X $600 to $1500 or more
Mac Pro $1700 for a older dual - dual set up with all quad-core at the higher price points.

How about:
- MacBook 13"
- MacBook Pro 15", 17"
- MacBook Nano 13" (half the thickness of the MB) - difficult to get comfortable keyboard on a 11" version.
- iMac 17" (education only) -same as current model but reduced cost.
- iMac 20", 24" (Santa Rosa)
- RIP Mac Mini
- Some kind of AppleTV Pro (desktop hard disk, wireless multitouch remote control, 1080 & Widget support)
- Mac Pro (BluRay option and AE/BT by default)
- Cinema Displays 20", 24", 30" (IR and iSight included)
