..and in the System Profiler the display is listed as
Displays:
Color LCD:
Display Type
tLCD
Resolution
t1440 x 900
Depth
t32-bit Color
Built-In
tYes
Core Image
tSupported
Which is identical to my old G4 PB. Shouldn't it show it as an LED display?

Nope.
It's still an LCD display but uses LEDs for the backlighting instead of the old cold-cathode tubes that were used in the old displays.

It seems like it would behoove Apple to add a SP line with something like: "Backlight: Mercury-free light emitting diodes" -
