Networking question...
Okay, this may expose my ignorance for all to see but I'd like my OSX iMac to connect to my Compaq over Ethernet. I've got a CAT-5 cable and I'm rearin' to go... now what?
If I just connect the two computers together with the cable will OSX auto-recognize the Compaq and let me transfer my MP3s?
Thanks for your help in advance! ;-)

When I connect the two machines and open the "Connect to server" dialog in Finder, no devices are displayed.

<strong>So I take it this "CAT-5 patch" cable won't cut it, then? I'm really looking for a direct-to-PC solution here, otherwise I'd go with the hub idea. When I return my cable tomorrow, then, should I look for one designated "crossover cable" or some other nomenclature? Thanks,

Joe, when you bring the cable back look for "Crossover Cable" looks exactly like Cat5 cable.. more often then not it's yellow. Sells for a few bucks more than regular Cat5. I know there's people here who will tell ya that you can just cross em over yourself and make your own crossover cable, but unless you've got the tools it's a bit of a job..

2. In Win right-click on your HD icon, select sharing and just accept defaults (share name. etc... but make note of share name), you may have to modify permissions to your share (just click on permissions tab), then click OK
3. On mac do cmd+K, then you should be able to see your win comp, if not type this in address box:
smb://your.pc.ip.address/sharename
(i'm assuming that you know how to get your PC's IP)
That's it.
Now you can access your entire HD on Win, while mac is not accessible from PC.
If you would like to make it work both ways just go to sharing in system preferences, enable windows sharing.
then you can access your mac from windows by thiss address: \\\\your.mac.ip.address\\your_short_username
HTH,
And one more thing i forgot to mention, you are using OS 10.2.x right?
